Barnburgh and Harlington Allotments

Furlong Road Harlington
Secretary : Mick Reilly contact here
Treasurer : Angela Cheesmond
Originally set aside for coal miners recreation, the site has 28 full plots some of which have been changed into half plots to satisfy demand.
The site is 'self-managed' and as such gets no funds from Doncaster Council nor the Parish Council. Being 'self-managed' the Barnburgh and Harlington's Allotments committee has to maintain the site and the perimeter hedge which abuts onto Furlong Road. Whilst the site attracts no financial support from Local Authorities it does have to pay ground rent to Doncaster Council.
Demand for plots is high and prospective tenants should register their interests with the secretary in writing,

Meeting Doncaster Allotments Steering Committee |
|
12 March 2012 At their invitation, The secretary and treasurer met with Doncaster Allotments Steering Committee. On your behalf, we requested information about the proposed rent increases. We were informed that our rents were due to increase in 2013 to bring us in line with other self-managed sites. Currently other self managed sites are paying a rent of £240 per hectare, and that, that is proposed to increase by 20%. We asked what we could expect for such an increase in rent. We were told Doncaster considered self managed sites as autonomous and as such we could expect nothing in return for the rent. We challenged the proposed increase on the grounds that Doncaster had continued to accept a rent from us without communication. We drew to their attention that we were in possession of a contract between British Coal and Doncaster in resect of our site and that the rent was stated as £12 per annum and as far as we were concerned this contract was ‘in perpetuity’. A copy of the agreement was left with them for the perusal of the legal dept. We raised concerns about the site being on flood plains and one corner suffered from mine water seepage. We notified them that we would appeal any rent increase on those grounds. Friday 23rd March The Secretary asked for an update and was told the matter is still pending. |

Sub Letting Allotments |
|
Tenants are reminded that no-one may sub-let plots. Any plot or part plot that becomes vacant must be notified to the secretary who will offer the plot to the next person on the waiting list. Any tenant who feels that they can no longer cope with a full plot must notify the Secretary who may, with consent of the committee, change the plot to half plots and allocate the new plot to the next person on the waiting list. Persons assisting on an allotment must be on a waiting list to obtain tenancy. |
