You may not know it but St Peter's Church is in
desperate need of repair, especially the Chancel Roof. The roof
is lead and has worn very thin over the years and has been
leaking quite badly over the last two years. Although we have
made temporary repairs to the roof we are told that these will
not last for very long and more permanent action is needed.
The Church has no money. All the income of the church is needed
for the running costs of the building and its ministry.
Everybody in the community is being encouraged to do their bit
in response to this Appeal.
A big community involvement with fund raising is most important
if we are to obtain a sympathetic hearing from the funding
bodies who can supply serious money.
On the day I write this, in early November our total is just under £30,000, which we are very happy to report is enough to replace the chancel roof at St Peter's, which has been leaking badly for years.
As well as the work on the roof, which will begin in the next couple of weeks, the chancel is now opened up, the old choir screens have been removed and the North Aisle, where the floor was totally rotten is being replaced this week by a stone floor.
The medieaval screen which was on the right hand side will be stored in the Cresacre chapel until it is permanently resited. As well as all this work, much of it having been done by local people, a new cover has been made for the Communion table in memory of Ian Allsop and Tommy Howells.
Another important project has been the restoration of the role of honour from the first world war which has been guilded and revarnished for us, again by a kind and generous friend of the church.
The next events on the Appeal Calendar are a fashion show, hosted by the Womens Institute on Thursday 29th November in the Village Hall, a stall at the Christmas Market outside the Church and hall on 1st December, a concert by Banburgh Male Voice Choir on 6th December in Church and some of the proceeds of the Christmas Tree Festival which is to be held from after Carols on the Green on Thursday 20th December and up to Christmas.
More details of these events will be on posters around the village, in the church magazine and the Grapevine and in the Christmas events list which will go to every house in Barnburgh and Harlington at the beginning of December.
The Coach and Horses Public House will be organising fund raising events throughout the year.
We need your help to supplement this list.
We need this list of fund raising activities
to be long and impressive.
But to avoid replication or a wasteful use of resources, please
let us know what you are doing first.
We can help with advertising and photocopying if required.

Paul Shepherd, Fitzwilliam Drive, Harlington, did a
Sponsored Three Peaks Run in June. He raised £190 for the Appeal

Denise Watson, The Pinfold, Barnburgh,
organised a sponsored walk for Mature Ladies on 15th
August,"Senior Ramblings"' and raised £573 for the Appeal
The Launch Day itself on September 22nd, netted £4,000.
The Sunflower by the Church now (October 2007) indicates,
correctly, that the Total funds raised so far for the Appeal
during 2007 is in the region of £30,000.
New money raising ventures that have been suggested, but as yet
no person willing to get them organised has come forward.
1. A Car Boot Sale. A good site is available near to the
village.
2. Some sort of Equestrian Event in and around the village. An
opportunity for the Horse owners in the community to get togeher
and support the Appeal.
